Day 22: Picture Perfect!

Hot Springs, SD to Rapid City, SD
74 miles with 5,100' of climbing

Once again, a nasty thunderstorm had occurred just prior to our morning departure. In fact, we literally followed the storm out of town. Our first stop was Wind Cave National Park which is filled with buffalo that roam freely. We had been warned to keep our distance, but this guy decided that he wanted to be right by the road, providing us with a rare close-up view.
Prairie dogs are rampant within the park. This little fellow just wanted to say hello....

At mile 37, we saw the Crazy Horse Memorial. This gigantic stone carving serves as a memorial to the Souix chief Crazy Horse and Native American.
The last photo-op occurred when we saw Mount Rushmore. The 60-foot granite sculpture depicts the heads of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. The site memorializes the birth and development of American Democracy.

All in all, it was a wonderful day, despite the never-ending climbs!
