Day 21: South Dakota!

Lusk, WY to Hot Springs, SD
92 miles with 2,880' of climbing

While we were planning to arise at 4:30, we were all awakened by a huge clap of thunder at 4:20. It was not a good sign for someone who had to hit the roads on a bicycle a short time later. We all feared the worst - that we would be riding in pouring rain for 92 miles. The brightly colored rain jackets came out of hiding.  Once again, the weather Gods smiled upon us as we packed the van. Although the roads were wet, the sun began to emerge from the clouds and by the time we reached our first SAG, rain clothes had disappeared.
Personally, I had terrific day! Having learned a lesson about being the last to load, today I was the first. Thus, Gail and I rolled out at 6:30 and remained at the front of the pack the entire day. While our 16.4 average was much slower than yesterday, we didn't have the assistance of the tailwind. At mile 56, we crossed into South Dakota. Entering a new state is always such a milestone! Although it is difficult to see the state sign, here is a photo...

The terrain is much more appealing in that the prairie has been replaced with grasslands, including conifer-covered hills. I took this photo at the top of a 4-mile climb. You can see the abundance of Ponderosa pine trees.

Because it's Sunday, the town of Hot Springs was basically closed. We were lucky to find an outdoor bakery that served salads and sandwiches. Tonight's dinner was at an interesting venue - a bowling alley where we literally sat on the lanes. I guess that I should be happy that no one was using our lane!

Tomorrow, I will see Mt. Rushmore. We were told at tonight's RAP that the original plan was to depict the four presidents from their head to their waist, but they ran out of money. I promise some great photos tomorrow!

  1. Hey Annie,

Looking at the pic of you and Gail i can see you both have dropped some weight. And with riding all those miles and then getting into towns where its tough to find anything to eat, its no wonder! So i want you guys to start thinking about your dream dinner - in great detail - and to let me know. I promise to make it happen when you get back!
